Part IX: Overall Experience and Conclusion Reflection

Reflecting on the year, I could not have been more blessed. At this point last year I was merely dreaming about my experiences to come in FLP. Being a part of the Freshman Leadership Program was something I had wanted so bad since I first applied to Creighton. I knew where I was and where I wanted to be. I put all of my eggs in one basket and only applied to Creighton. I just had this gut feeling that it would be one of the best things I could ever do for myself. When I heard about FLP I knew it was for me and that I would have a second family away from home.

That is exactly what I got. Since this time last year I have matured into an independent, and confident individual. I have been educated in several leadership topics and have expanded upon my personal leadership styles. In high school I was the girl with every title when it came to leadership in sports, clubs, and work. Coming to college and being a member of FLP I’ve realized that you don’t have to have the title to be a leader. You can be a leader everyday. To me, a leader is someone for the people. Cheering someone up on a bad day, smiling and waving to everyone you know on the mall, or encouraging those who are stressed out are small acts that leaders do without hesitation.

I truly believe that FLP has let me come out of my shell. I’ve never really been a shy person, but I am definitely more inclined to become involved with everything possible because of this program. FLP has given me the confidence and support I need to go forth and live out my mission. My freshman year has been everything I expected and so much more. I’m involved in so many things, I have leadership titles, I have countless friends, and I feel at home.

I attribute all of my success at Creighton so far to FLP. When thinking of where I would be without this program, I don’t see myself anywhere remotely near where I am or who I am. I would probably have better grades, but I wouldn’t have a place at Creighton. One thing I pride myself in is the fact that I pour all of myself into every commitment I make. While some people think being involved in countless things forces you to spread yourself too thin, I couldn’t disagree more when it comes to my life. I stick faithfully to commitments and put all of them first. Because of the Freshman Leadership Program I have the support system I need to accomplish all of my goals and be there for me when I get stressed out. These people have been behind me and cheered me on in everything I have done this year. I’ve laughed, cried, smiled, and fought with these people. I can honestly say that I have made my best friends in this program and I have truly learned the value of friendship, family, and community.
